Birth right

by Maria Alexa

Yesterday, I talked to my therapist
We finally broke through the surface
Of how I never got over this

You think that’d I be used to this
By now
sitting on couches
With strangers
Always feeling like my life was in danger

Some of my blood don’t believe me
Cause all you do is make up stories
You’re the definition of gaslight
Telling a child she does nothing right
Then claim to be a mother
That’s not a birth right

When you see love you claim possession
Do you even look at your reflection?
Even shattered glass
Sees imperfections

You go through friends just like water, do you know they tried to make me into a liar?
But you’re the puppet master
Yet claim no ownership to your disasters

So here I am, at 31
Wondering why I always feel like a burden
To everyone I ever hold
I can’t let go, it’s getting old
Did you know your shame, still causes me so much pain?
You never even said “I’m sorry”
You’re so vain
I know you still
bury it all like me
But I will never be you
And you will never be me

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

From performing “shows” for her dad at 4 years old on her toy piano, to lip reading her mom’s lips to memorize Andrea Bocelli’s “Con Te Partirò” melodies and lyrics have always been threaded and intertwined throughout Maria’s childhood (& DNA). Maria also has kept a journal since she was 7 years old, writing little song ideas, love stories, and expressing the difficult parts of life that she could only put to pen and paper as a way to cope. Throughout her early childhood and into her young adolescence, she performed in high school musicals, chamber choir, All State, All County, NYSMA, Acoustic Cafe’s, & Acapella Groups throughout college. It wasn’t until after Maria graduated college in 2016 where she began to upload covers and original songs to SoundCloud, peaking the interest of a few producers who then guided the path of what creating an original song really looks like. Through a lot of creativity and experimentation, Maria started honing in on her sound, artist direction, & how she could articulate exactly how she was feeling in each song that feels equally as genuine as it is relatable to the listener. Music continues to save her life, and she wants to do the same with her music, making an impact not only globally but generationally. In 2020, Maria finally had the courage to put out her first single ‘Sunshine’ a moody love song dance track. Since, she has grown exponentially in all areas as an artist, released over 15 singles, accumulated over 500K streams on Spotify alone, all independently. Maria’s growth took heights in 2023, when she performed “The Blessing” by Elevation Worship for a friend’s wedding, going immensely viral on all social media platforms, with over 10M views on TikTok alone, incentivizing her to release a cover version on Spotify. Just a month later, Maria won a contest with Live Nation, One’s To Watch, and Gala Music, performing at Midtown Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia with the likes of some of her biggest idols including Billie Eilish, Lizzy McAlpine, Fletcher, The 1975 & JP Saxe. Maria has collaborated with the likes of Wayne Wilkins (Natasha Bedingfield, Beyoncé) & Ian Kimmel (BTS, Anderson Paak) on popular songs like ‘Comfortable’ & ‘Scared to Know You’ – vulnerable tracks about falling out of love and the transition of finding love after the fallout. Maria Alexa is currently working on finalizing a few projects to launch in 2025, including a community called ‘Cherry Avenue’ which will be a place for her fans to feel closer to Maria by getting a behind the scenes look at her songwriting & recording process, new releases, merch drops, and more.
