Petty Betty

I have had too many
people in my life
Who seem to think time
passed is somehow
an apology,
None of them want to take
accountability for the ways
they hurt me;
One of the five girls who
bullied me out of our friend group
in high school, without warning
and reason, apologized to me—
I forgave her,
and suddenly they all seemed
to think all was forgotten;
One person apologizing out of five?
Getting one out of a five isn't
even a passing score,
But I suppose I'm supposed to let
the past stay in the past and be the
bigger person.
Well, unfortunately, I am a petty betty
and I got the memory of an elephant.
