Prelude to Shattering

Ice sheathes over ceaseless rivers,
each crack a slow, quiet scream--
beneath, water aches.
Under weight, pines bend,
snow slipping from their heavy arms.
Stillness swallows sound.
A red bud clings,
fingers of bark tightly wound around
spring's first sigh.
Each holds lingering silence;
a slow prelude
caught in telephone wire.
