Sunday Mass

a dusty pew, with no one else but two old women
“love is patient, love is kind”, yet it is still forbidden;
if loving a girl is a sin, then all i ask is to be forgiven
for I am growing weary of keeping my true self hidden.
and so, when the sign of peace was later exchanged,
an abrupt confession with my mom was made.
she says, “pray it away if you want to be saved”
but my heart knew that this feeling could hardly ever fade.
the mass has ended, and silence lingered in the air;
“the truth will set you free”, yet it will not once again be declared
for it comes at a high price of harsh words and piercing glares
hence, an acceptable life is with a man whose children I will bear.
