Two Birds, Or Just One?

“Just two more days till we’re out of this godforsaken town!” she chuckled as we ran through the empty roads. I stopped in my tracks, watching her whoop and woo as she ran. She looked like a bird soaring through the sky. I stood smiling at her.

“Come on, let’s keep going!” she yelled from afar.

“I want to, I’m just getting tired!” I yelled back. I wanted her to keep running. Of course, she didn’t.

“You should’ve kept going.” I told her. She looked offended.

“No way! We always stick together.” she holds her hand out and I take it. “When we get to college, we’re gonna be even more inseparable.”

“One more day.” I whispered to myself, as I stood at her door. Before I could even knock she pulled it open and dragged me in.

“I made so many plans!” She led me in front of her computer. “The first day we’re there we can spend it organizing our dorms. I’m still mad that they didn’t let us room together even though we requested it.”

“Yeah, I don’t know what they were thinking.” I guiltily replied. I listened all day as she went on and on about classes, decorations, etc. I replied vaguely to each question. I never did like lying, especially to her. I didn’t tell her today, I couldn’t find any openings to bring it up. Really, I didn’t want to break her heart. I’ll do it tomorrow. I have no choice but to do it tomorrow.

I woke up to banging on the trailer door. I opened it, expecting a notice of eviction. She just stood there, smiling.

“Give me your phone.” she said, wasting no time.

“What?” I replied groggily.

“It’s a surprise!” she told me, practically jumping up and down with joy. I handed my phone over to her without a thought.

“Do you want some coffee?” I asked as I made mine.

“What’s this?” she asked, shoving my phone in my face. The smile that was plastered on her face for a week all of a sudden, disappeared. I averted my eyes to what she was showing me. Suddenly, I didn’t need coffee to wake me up. One sentence stuck out to me. “We thank you for telling us you have no longer decided to go to our college.” She wasn’t meant to find out this way. I quickly pulled her outside before my mother woke up.

“Why don’t you wanna go to college with me?” she asked woefully.

“I couldn’t pay for it. I want to go, trust me.” I told her. She scoffs.

“Liar, I know you’ve saved up enough. Get back to me when you’re ready to tell the truth.” She said as she walked away. I just let her leave. I didn’t run after her. How would she react if I told her my mother spent it all on booze? It would be better for her to think that I didn’t wanna go. If I told her I couldn’t go she wouldn’t either. I couldn’t do that to her. She’s better off leaving me behind.
